AUSTRALIA FILLING UP THE TALENT POOL
Australia fans thought it could not get any better than the run-scoring days of the 1993/94 with star names Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer picking up centuries at will. Well, Australia fans thought wrong.
This season's Sheffield Shield has seen an explosion in the number of young batsmen making centuries in first-class cricket. With three rounds of the Shield still to be played, 10 players aged 23 or younger have already scored 14 centuries between them this season. This is the most since the days of the aforementioned players.
This Shield season has undoubtedly been a golden summer for the new crop of young batters, with the likes of Ashton Agar and Sam Heazlett just two of the up and coming young-guns to impress Cricket Australia's National Talent Manager Greg Chappell.
